Greece’s air traffic is only 9.6% below 2019 levels

Air traffic in Greece so far this year has seen a sharp increase as it reached a total of 99,164 flights operated, falling behind pre-pandemic levels when no restrictions were imposed by 3,967 or 9.6%, the Greek Aviation Service (CAA) revealed.

According to a press release issued by the authority, the number of passengers registered in the first months of 2019 stood at 10.3 million, or 22.5%, or 2.2 million passengers less than in 2022, reports SchengenVisaInfo.com.

Furthermore, more than 3.5 million passengers were registered in Greece in April, representing a 555% increase compared to April 2021, when 548,102 passengers reached the country.

In addition, the number of operated flights peaked at 33,367, including 15,419 domestic flights and 17,948 international flights, representing a 153% increase from last year when 13,191 flights were operated.

International arrivals increased by almost 1,190% last month, from 101,541 passengers in 2021 to almost 1.3 million.

According to air traffic for 2022, the total number of passengers had reached 8.1 million, an increase of 383% compared to the first months of 2021 when 1.7 million passengers had been registered, while the number of flights operated had increased. increased by 103% – from 44,185 to 89,690 flights operated during the corresponding period.

Of nearly 90,000 flights operated this year, 39,631 were international and 50,059 were operated domestically.

Comparing the statistics with the corresponding period in 2019, when the number of flights operated stood at 99,164, 9.6% lower than pre-pandemic levels when no restrictions were imposed. In total, passenger traffic was 10.4 million over the four months of 2019, down 22.5% compared to the same period in 2022.

Nevertheless, as April 2019 data shows, out of 33,727 flights operated in April this year, there is a 1.1% drop in air traffic.

In total passenger traffic, including departures and arrivals traffic, which peaked at 3,745,671 in April 2019, a decline of 4.1% is seen. Regarding passenger arrivals on international flights, in April 2019, fares amounted to 1,380,543, while for the same period in 2022, there was a drop of -5.9%.
