The new Brasov-Ghimbav International Airport in Romania has signed a contract with Saab for a digital air traffic control tower.
The services will be operated by Romatsa, the Romanian air navigation service provider.
The contract, signed between Saab Digital Air Traffic Solutions (SDATS) and a Romanian consortium led by UTI Construction and Facility Management, includes a Saab Digital Tower System (r-TWR) to be installed at the new Brasov airport as well as a control room at the Romatsa air traffic control center in Arad.
Brasov-Ghimbav Int. The airport will use the digital air traffic control tower
Brasov-Ghimbav International Airport is the first newly built airport in Romania for more than 20 years and will be operated using a digital tower.
“Operating Brasov-Ghimbay Airport from our center in Arad will be an important step in our innovation journey at Romatsa,” said Florin Manta, Arad Regional Manager of Romatsa. “We anticipate that our air traffic controllers will be able to provide services at the airport in a safe, flexible and efficient manner. In the consortium and in Saab, we have found a solid and trustworthy supplier to deploy the digital tower. We are eagerly awaiting the start of the project and the commissioning of the airport.
Saab’s digital tower solution is a breakthrough in air traffic control. It was first introduced in Sweden and was followed by airports in the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium and the USA, while also being selected by air stations of the Royal Navy in the UK.
“The installation of the Saab r-TWR at Brasov-Ghimbav Airport will make it the second newly built airport to use a digital tower from day one,” said Per Ahl, CEO of Saab Digital Air Traffic Solutions. “This flexible digital solution with a technical platform will support our consortium partners Brasov Airport and ROMATSA in setting up the first operational digital tower in Romania.”
